Clinic Parking Lot Improvements | Military Installation, NC

Gradient optimized the parking layout by consolidating spaces, enhancing accessibility for disabled soldiers, and implementing a bioretention basin for stormwater management, ultimately providing a more efficient and compliant solution.

Overview

The Federal Health Clinic faced a shortage of parking spaces, especially during peak hours, forcing clients to park in a dirt lot across Goldberg Street. Given that many clients were soldiers with varying disabilities, providing accessible parking was a top priority.

Gradient Solution

Initially, Gradient was presented with a conceptual layout that incorporated permeable pavers for stormwater management and preserved long leaf pine trees by routing parking around them. However, after evaluating site conditions, Gradient proposed a more efficient solution that consolidated parking areas, eliminating scattered spaces among the trees.

Due to the site’s topography and unsuitable soils, permeable pavers were replaced with a bioretention basin at the lower end of the site for effective stormwater management.

Additionally, Gradient exceeded code requirements by providing multiple handicap-accessible spaces adjacent to Goldberg Street, ensuring easier access to the clinic.
