Intersection Improvements at a Military Installation in NC
Gradient’s design enhancements transformed a congested intersection into a more efficient, signalized roadway, reducing delays and improving overall traffic flow for a Military Installation.
Overview
This intersection experiences heavy inbound traffic in the mornings and outbound traffic in the evenings. Due to limited lanes and existing signalization, congestion necessitated improvements. Initially, Fort Bragg requested a traffic circle at this location.
However, during the design process, Gradient identified significant grading challenges and extensive utility relocations that would be required. As a result, the client revised the project scope to an improved signalized intersection.
Gradient Solution
Traffic counts on all intersecting roadways were conducted by others, and Gradient developed a conceptual lane layout to accommodate projected traffic volumes.
Working closely with the traffic engineer, Gradient refined this concept into a preliminary design, detailing lane configurations, widths, and turn lanes.
Once approved, Gradient prepared an Intersection Site Layout Plan outlining horizontal geometry, curb and gutter limits, pavement, and travel lanes.
Additionally, Gradient developed Roadway Plan & Profile sheets along with typical roadway sections for access road connections.
The final design included required pavement markings such as lane delineations, directional arrows, stop bars, and hatching areas. This Project significantly improved traffic flow and efficiency at the intersection.
