Repair Motor Pool Pavement – Military Installation, NC
Overview
The pavement at the Motor Pool of a North Carolina Military Installation had deteriorated significantly. In addition, there was a timber retaining wall which was failing and impacting use of portions of the motor pool. This motor pool had been used by various units over the years and had been subdivided into different sections.
Gradient Solution
Working closely with Barnhill Contracting, the project team devised a plan to repair the existing pavement over the entire site.
All the existing asphalt was removed and a new base course and asphalt surface course was provided. At least two different pavement sections were designed for selected areas.
The pavement design needed to accommodate the heavy military vehicles using this facility. All interior fence was removed and replaced and a new, segmental block retaining wall was designed to replace the failing timber structure.
The work needed to be accomplished in six separate phases to allow the user continued use of the facility.
Work was accomplished in one section while the user continued operations in the remaining sections. New pavement markings were placed to accommodate the various sizes and types of vehicles using the facility.
